🩻 Destroying your own legacy
Legacies are complex things - they take a lot of effort to establish but even more to maintain. This is because life is unpredictable, people make mistakes and one poor decision can have a massive impact on one's reputation. As the saying goes, "One mistake can undo a lifetime of good work."
Successful people have a lot going for them - fame, fortune, and a fancy title or two. But "With great power comes great responsibility" and sometimes, successful people take that responsibility a little too lightly.
We have seen this in recent years with individuals like Martin Shkreli and Vijay Mallya. Shkreli was a pharmaceutical executive who gained notoriety for raising the price of a lifesaving drug by over 5,000%. He was later convicted of securities fraud and sentenced to prison, losing his fortune and reputation in the process.
The founder of Kingfisher Airlines changed the trajectory of airlines in India - Mr Vijay Mallya. However, he also gravely stained his legacy. Kingfisher Airlines, which was once a super successful business, collapsed later due to mismanagement and financial irregularities. Mallya left India with hefty bank loans and still faces extradition proceedings and criminal charges.
The bottom line is, being successful is great, but it's important to remember that success is not permanent. It takes hard work, dedication and humility to maintain a positive legacy and net worth. Ratan Tata is the perfect example of someone who has built and will leave an incredible legacy. Something we can all learn from!
