👾 The hot take: Is Metaverse colliding?
Creating a new mass-adopted consumer hardware product is hard
The market is buzzing right now, with layoffs happening all over. Mature companies and young startups alike are applying every force to bring down their costs as funding prospects seem weak. Hiring has been frozen all over, and everyone is playing the safe card. Alas… winter is here!
The recent news of Meta firing 13% of its workforce, which constitutes around 11,000 people, has shocked the entire market and created a sense of depression in the minds of tech workers. This massive layoff by Meta (probably the biggest of this year) brings back into question, the future Mark Zuckerberg is trying to paint. It has been spending billions of dollars annually to inch closer to its vision. There is no denying that Meta has been challenging the status quo and trying to make a difference here, but the situation is not at all in support of its cause.
We are seeing that people are angry, and the market is losing conviction of their efforts. This has already reflected in Meta’s performance in the market. Their share price is already down 67% from a year earlier and they have already lost approximately $700 B in market value.
Even after this heavy criticism of high spending and negligible results, some entrepreneurs and renowned people from the industry have come out in support of Mark Zuckerberg and the metaverse:

We believe it’s too early to wash off what Meta and Mark are trying to do. The transition to the world of VR and AR would be rocky but we are excited to see how the future would unfold.

How did you start your journey in product design? What was your inspiration?
It’s funny, but I got into graphic designing making one-direction fanfiction book covers when I was 14. That started my self-learning journey into graphic design via the internet. I was lucky to have internet access early. Through that, I was exposed to coding and I learned coding on Codecademy, back when it was completely free. This helped me get a path. I knew I was always creative, so I participated in many art and craft-related competitions in my school and then getting to do art on the computer was my perfect intersection point.
According to you, what is considered a "great product design"?
Great Product design is anything that makes your life seamless and brings a smile to your face while you’re at it.
🧐 Food for thought
